Rapper Nas takes the SXSW Interactive Festival stage to join Ben Horowitz of Andreessen Horowitz in conversation at 3:30 pm on Sunday, March 9.
Horowitz and Nas built a friendship through their common interests in rap and venture backing. They have notably teamed up for a number of investments including the crowdfunding platform Crowdtilt and Coinbase, a digital wallet that lets you buy and use bitcoin currency.
One may find this combination unexpected, but Horowitz has been drawing from rap lyrics for insight for over 30 years, from his youth to leading one of the most successful venture capital firms in the world. Horowitz also authors a uniquely candid and extremely insightful blog, known as "required reading" for many Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, with post themes introduced through rap lyrics.
In addition to releasing eight consecutive platinum and multi-platinum albums and selling over 25 million records worldwide, Nas has cultivated his entrepreneurial ambitions through building his own record label, retail sneaker store, and magazine publishing company, Mass Appeal Magazine. Experiences from these ventures will undoubtably be covered during the Q & A. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of Nas' first album, Illmatic. In this conversation on The Hard Things About Hard Things (also the title of Horowitz's new book), Horowitz and Nas remove the veil shadowing the challenges of starting, running and navigating the inevitable pitfalls of a business.
Drawing from his storied career—as software engineer, cofounder, CEO, and investor—Ben will share practical wisdom, insights, and anecdotes from his own experience founding, running, selling, buying, managing, and investing in technology companies. RSVP for this session and join Horowitz for a book signing following his presentation to have your copy signed the week of its release!
